Attorney General’s Office Says Social Security Checks Were Mailed Prior to Gustav

BATON ROUGE, La. (September 3, 2008) – Thousands of Louisianians may be worried about their Social Security checks which are normally received on the 3rd of each month. Attorney General Buddy Caldwell says the United Postal Service was proactive and processed the checks prior to the storm making landfall.

* USPS delivered Railroad Retirement, Office of Personnel Management, Veteran’s Administration, Social Security Administration checks Friday & Saturday for the Gulf Coast areas from Tallahassee Florida to McAllen Texas.

* On Friday August 29, and Saturday August 30, monthly benefit checks for customers in potential Hurricane impacted areas were processed and delivered. Nearly 400,000 people in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida have received their Social Security checks rather than on September 3rd, the regularly
scheduled payment day.

Louisiana: DSS Launches Operation Reconnect for Family Members of Evacuees

BATON ROUGE – More than 84,000 Louisiana residents are currently taking refuge in shelters in nine states and the Department of Social Services has created a hotline where loved ones can call to locate family members who evacuated for Hurricane Gustav. The phone number is 1-800-957-1601 and it will be activated at noon central time.

Family members who call the hotline will be asked to provide the name of their loved one and operators will search the Department of Social Services database of evacuees as well as the Red Cross Safe and Well list. It is important to note that the Red Cross list will only include those shelter residents who allow their names to be released.

Alabama: Governor Riley Lifts Mandatory Evacuation Order for Baldwin County- Residents May Return

Anyone needing shelter should contact the American Red Cross Alabama Gulf Coast Chapter at (251) 972-8512.

Mandatory Evacuation Order Lifted:

Alabama Governor Bob Riley has lifted the mandatory evacuation order for all of Baldwin County. It is safe to return to all areas.

ROADS

CLOSED – Bridge on Leahman Road in Summerdale

All other Baldwin County Roads are open.

Residents are urged to use caution as you drive over roads that were flooded and washed out.

The Baldwin County Highway Department has re-opened the following roads:

  • County Road 32 East of Greeno Road
  • County Road 48 at Fish River

Baldwin County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) and the Baldwin County Highway Department will continue to monitor flood prone areas. In the event further action is needed an immediate notification will be given.

All Citizens Affected by Gustav: Please Access Food and Water Safety Information

Hurricane Gustav has caused widespread power outages throughout Louisiana and the Southern Mississippi area.   When residents return to their homes, we ask that they please use extra caution concerning food and water safety.

Please acknowledge that food can be contaminated by flood waters or spoiled because of a power outage, and that some communities may be under drinking water advisories.

For information on how to evaluate what food is safe to eat and what isn’t, how to clean out a refrigerator or freezer after a power outage, how to purify drinking water (as some residents may be under boil water notices), and other important topics, please visit our free OneStorm food and water resources.

It’s better not to take any chances when health is on the line.

Mississippi Department of Transportation: Gustav Evacuees Can Take Alternate Route from I-59 to I-20

JACKSON, MISS., — The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) announces the following traffic information:

MDOT wishes to advise motorists of an alternate route from Interstate 59 to Interstate 20.  From Interstate 59, motorists can take Exit 126 to Highway 18 in Pachuta to Highway 45 North and continue to Interstate 20.

Hurricane Gustav Evacuees Are Urged to Reigster on Red Cross Safe and Well List

Baton Rouge (August 31, 2008) -The American Red Cross encourages all Hurricane Gustav evacuees to register online to post a “Safe and Well” message at https://disastersafe.redcross.org.

The Safe and Well website is designed to help concerned family and friends check on the well-being of a loved one affected by a disaster. Evacuees can post first and last name, an “As of Date,” and the “safe and well” message selected.

Safe and Well is available in Spanish, and users who speak other languages can register by calling 866-GET-INFO and a Call Agent will connect the caller to AT&T’s language line for translation.

Registration for the hearing impaired can be supported by dialing the TTY number. For the latest on Hurricane Gustav, you can visit emergency.louisiana.gov or call the state’s emergency hotline at 1-866-288-2484 to listen to a recorded message with the most up-to-date information.

Volunteers Needed for Hurricane Gustav Response

BATON ROUGE, La. (August 30, 2008) – The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals-Office of Public Health (DHH-OPH) is seeking volunteers to help in pre and post-storm emergency activities.

Those interested in assisting are asked to sign up with Louisiana Volunteers in Action (LAVA), the DHH’s volunteer management program. Prospective volunteers should register at www.lava.dhh.louisiana.gov. DHH-OPH volunteer coordinators will then call registered volunteers with information on when and where to report.

Volunteers don’t have to be medical professionals. DHH-OPH officials are asking anyone who registers to be ready to assist. Those who register may be assigned to help at a Medical Special Needs Shelter or at t! he state’s bus triage operation. Non-medical volunteers may be asked to feed patients or perform clerical tasks. Medical volunteers will be involved in direct patient care.
