Attorney General’s Office Says Social Security Checks Were Mailed Prior to Gustav

BATON ROUGE, La. (September 3, 2008) – Thousands of Louisianians may be worried about their Social Security checks which are normally received on the 3rd of each month. Attorney General Buddy Caldwell says the United Postal Service was proactive and processed the checks prior to the storm making landfall.

* USPS delivered Railroad Retirement, Office of Personnel Management, Veteran’s Administration, Social Security Administration checks Friday & Saturday for the Gulf Coast areas from Tallahassee Florida to McAllen Texas.

* On Friday August 29, and Saturday August 30, monthly benefit checks for customers in potential Hurricane impacted areas were processed and delivered. Nearly 400,000 people in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida have received their Social Security checks rather than on September 3rd, the regularly
scheduled payment day.

Volunteers Needed for Hurricane Gustav Response

BATON ROUGE, La. (August 30, 2008) – The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals-Office of Public Health (DHH-OPH) is seeking volunteers to help in pre and post-storm emergency activities.

Those interested in assisting are asked to sign up with Louisiana Volunteers in Action (LAVA), the DHH’s volunteer management program. Prospective volunteers should register at www.lava.dhh.louisiana.gov. DHH-OPH volunteer coordinators will then call registered volunteers with information on when and where to report.

Volunteers don’t have to be medical professionals. DHH-OPH officials are asking anyone who registers to be ready to assist. Those who register may be assigned to help at a Medical Special Needs Shelter or at t! he state’s bus triage operation. Non-medical volunteers may be asked to feed patients or perform clerical tasks. Medical volunteers will be involved in direct patient care.
