Hello all,
We realize that many of you are still searching for the most updated, post-disaster information from your parishes or counties, and we want to help.
With Tropical Storm Hanna and Hurricane Ike, we’re operating more blogs to help the communities in the storms’ tracks. We have to sign off on the Hurricane Gustav blog for now, but, we can direct you folks to the right places for your needed information:
- For Louisiana citizens, the state of Louisiana is routinely updating this site with press releases: http://emergency.louisiana.gov/ You can find information on school closures, FEMA help, food stamps, POD’s, and other important post-disaster resources there.
- For Mississippi citizens, the state of Mississippi is routinely updating its Mississippi Emergency Management site with post-disaster information.
- Local media, such as radio and television outlets, typically provides updated local information.
- Visit your local emergency management/government web site for recovery effort and community information. You can find a list of Louisiana emergency management sites here: http://www.ohsep.louisiana.gov/linkpages/parishpa.htm
- For free hurricane preparedness resources, including articles on how to clean up after flooding, how to clean out refrigerators and freezers after a power outage, and how to cope with disaster, please visit us at OneStorm.
- If you still cannot find the information you need, you can e-mail me at Heidi@onestorm.org and I will answer you as quickly as possible.
Thank you for the wonderful feedback we’ve received from the affected counties and parishes. It has truly been a pleasure to bring information to the communities that need it most.
Sincerely,
Heidi and Chris

Jefferson Parish officials are requesting residents and business owners to start reporting any structural property damage from Hurricane Gustav now.
The Jefferson Parish Department of Citizens’ Affairs, 736-6000 or 736-6100, will receive calls from citizens in both unincorporated areas and the municipalities starting September 3, 2008 through Sunday, September, 7, 2008 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and starting Monday, September 8, 2008 the hours will be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until further notice.
This data will allow parish officials to gain an accurate count on the number of properties damaged. This is necessary to apply for federal assistance if it becomes available and to continue to build a data base on the areas susceptible to flooding so that the parish can plan future drainage projects.

In conjunction with the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, Jefferson Parish Water Department is issuing a Boil Water Advisory for the town of Grand Isle as a precautionary measure due to loss of water pressure in the distribution system on the island from Hurricane Gustav. The restoration of pressure cannot be determined accurately at this time, but is expected to take 1-2 weeks, depending upon the extent of damage to the distribution system.
All residents of the island are urged to boil or disinfect their water by one of the following methods before consuming it or using it for food preparation:
Boil the water for one full minute in a clean container. The one minute starts after the water has been brought to a rolling boil. The flat taste can be eliminated by shaking the water in a bottle or pouring it from one container to another.
Disinfect the water by mixing 1/8 teaspoon of unscented, liquid chlorine laundry bleach with one gallon of water and letting it stand for at least 30 minutes prior to consumption. Be sure to mix it thoroughly. If the treated water has too strong a chlorine taste, it can be made more palatable by allowing the water to stand exposed to the air for a few hours or by repeatedly pouting it from one clean container to another.

Baton Rouge (September 2, 2008) – The Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is working with its federal, state and local partners to remind those that fled Hurricane Gustav to remain in place until state and local officials announce it is safe to return.
“Don’t go home when there’s no power, there’s no water, the roads are blocked, and trees are down,” said FEMA Administrator David Paulison.
Evacuees attempting to return home early face road blocks, traffic delays, limited water and food, limited utilities, no hospitals and limited if any health care facilities, and serious health hazards. Those crowding the roads seeking to return home are limiting the mobility of emergency responders, utility workers and other essential personnel who must travel to their area and complete their work before it is safe for the general public to return.
Instead, evacuees should remain where they are – with friends and family, at a hotel, or at a shelter. Shelters provide safe havens for evacuees with food and medical care while officials in southern Louisiana work to prepare for their return.

Jefferson Parish is working with surrounding parishes and the State of Louisiana on re-entry.
The first two phases of re-entry, called Tier 1 and Tier 2, will begin simultaneously today, Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at noon. Tier 1 is made up of critical businesses and contractors and first responders. Tier 2 is made up of those businesses necessary to prepare for the return of residents, such as groceries, pharmacies, gas stations and banks. Tier 1 and Tier 2 agencies and businesses must have “re-entry placards” which are credentials allowing them to enter and move about the parish. To speed up re-entry for residents, the plan for Tier 3 business re-entry has been cancelled. After Tier 1 and Tier 2 re-entry is complete, the parish will be open to re-entry by all other businesses and all residents.
Parish departments, partner agencies and private companies are working as fast as possible to reach “sustainable, sanitary, safe living conditions.” Clean up by parish forces and restoration of services by utility companies is underway.
Some roads leading into the parish are not passable. Within the parish, over 120,000 Entergy customers lost electricity. Power needed for water treatment and sewerage treatment has not been restored. Power lines and poles are down, some blocking streets, and many traffic signals are down and blocking some intersections. Trees are toppled and many tree limbs and other debris are obstacles on roadways. The parish Streets Department is clearing major thoroughfares and will then move onto secondary streets. There are no reports of street or structure flooding outside of the communities of Grand Isle and Lafitte.
Parish public schools and Archdiocesan parochial schools in Jefferson Parish will remain closed through the end of this week.

Jefferson Parish is in the process of assessing damage from Hurricane Gustav and planning the re-entry process for its citizens and businesses.
Clean up by parish forces and restoration of services by utility companies is underway.
Over 120,000 Entergy customers lost electricity and tours of the parish by Parish President Aaron Broussard, Parish Council members and parish work crews revealed the extent of damage. Power lines and poles are down, some blocking streets, and many traffic signals are down and blocking some intersections. Trees are toppled and many tree limbs and other debris are obstacles on roadways and some billboards were shredded by the storm.
Although a number of fences were pushed over by high winds and there was some damage to metal structures such as carports and storage sheds, most residences and businesses were spared major damage and there were no reports of street or structure flooding outside of the communities of Grand Isle and Lafitte.
The parish is working with surrounding parishes and the State of Louisiana on re-entry but the parish remains under a mandatory evacuation order and residents will not be allowed to return Tuesday, September 2.
Parish public schools will remain closed this week and Archdiocesan school officials said they will concur with the civil authorities regarding reopening of Jefferson Parish parochial schools, which will also remain closed through the end of this week.
Please continue reading for curfew and business re-opening information….
