Attorney General’s Office Says Social Security Checks Were Mailed Prior to Gustav

BATON ROUGE, La. (September 3, 2008) – Thousands of Louisianians may be worried about their Social Security checks which are normally received on the 3rd of each month. Attorney General Buddy Caldwell says the United Postal Service was proactive and processed the checks prior to the storm making landfall.

* USPS delivered Railroad Retirement, Office of Personnel Management, Veteran’s Administration, Social Security Administration checks Friday & Saturday for the Gulf Coast areas from Tallahassee Florida to McAllen Texas.

* On Friday August 29, and Saturday August 30, monthly benefit checks for customers in potential Hurricane impacted areas were processed and delivered. Nearly 400,000 people in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida have received their Social Security checks rather than on September 3rd, the regularly
scheduled payment day.

Louisiana: DSS Launches Operation Reconnect for Family Members of Evacuees

BATON ROUGE – More than 84,000 Louisiana residents are currently taking refuge in shelters in nine states and the Department of Social Services has created a hotline where loved ones can call to locate family members who evacuated for Hurricane Gustav. The phone number is 1-800-957-1601 and it will be activated at noon central time.

Family members who call the hotline will be asked to provide the name of their loved one and operators will search the Department of Social Services database of evacuees as well as the Red Cross Safe and Well list. It is important to note that the Red Cross list will only include those shelter residents who allow their names to be released.

More East Texas Gustav-Related School and Business Closures

The following businesses and institutions will be closed Tuesday.

Beaumont

- All Saints Episcopal School

- Beaumont ISD

- Beaumont VA Outpatient Clinic

- Harmony Science Academy

- Lamar University

- Lamar Institute of Technology

- Region 5 Education Service Center

- Target stores

Hardin County

- All Hardin County school districts will be closed Tuesday. This includes Hardin-Jefferson, Kountze, Lumberton, Silsbee and West Hardin school districts.

- The Big Thicket National Preserve will be closed until further notice. The closure includes all of the preserve’s facilities and all land and water areas within the boundaries of the preserve.

- Region 5 Education Service Center-Silsbee

East Texas School and Business Closures

***All public schools in Angelina County, except Zavalla I-S-D, will have classes as scheduled this week.  That’s according to Lufkin Independent School District Superintendent Roy Knight.  Knight tells East Texas News that all the area superintendents held a meeting and decided classes will resume Tuesday, as scheduled.

***Nacogdoches I-S-D will resume classes at the regular time on Tuesday (September 2), according to Superintendent Dr. Rodney Hutto.  N-I-S-D, however, is canceling all field trips for Tuesday.

The following businesses have contacted KTRE-TV to announce closings due to anticipated severe weather and possible electrical outage due to Hurricane Gustav:

School Closings:

  • In addition to being out of school on Labor Day, West Sabine ISD, Chester ISD, Brookeland ISD, Zavalla ISD, Hemphill ISD, Tenaha ISD, Shelbyville ISD, Broaddus ISD, San Augustine ISD, Eastview Academy and Harmony Christian School will cancel classes on Tuesday (September 2) in preparation for Hurricane Gustav.
  • First Baptist Day School in Nacogdoches will be closed Tuesday – Thursday.
  • Puppy Pound Learning Academy (daycare and pre-k) in Colmesneil will be closed Monday and Tuesday (September 1 and 2), and following the Colmesneil Independent School District’s schedule for the remainder of the week.
  • West Sabine ISD will be closed on Tuesday – September 2.  A decision regarding closure on Wednesday will be made by noon on Tuesday.
  • Angelina College has announced that it will delay the start of the fall semester until Wednesday, September 3rd. There will be no classes on campus or at the off campus locations on Tuesday, September 2nd. Late registration for AC classes will be extended through Friday, September 5th.

All Citizens Affected by Gustav: Please Access Food and Water Safety Information

Hurricane Gustav has caused widespread power outages throughout Louisiana and the Southern Mississippi area.   When residents return to their homes, we ask that they please use extra caution concerning food and water safety.

Please acknowledge that food can be contaminated by flood waters or spoiled because of a power outage, and that some communities may be under drinking water advisories.

For information on how to evaluate what food is safe to eat and what isn’t, how to clean out a refrigerator or freezer after a power outage, how to purify drinking water (as some residents may be under boil water notices), and other important topics, please visit our free OneStorm food and water resources.

It’s better not to take any chances when health is on the line.

Mississippi Department of Transportation: Gustav Evacuees Can Take Alternate Route from I-59 to I-20

JACKSON, MISS., — The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) announces the following traffic information:

MDOT wishes to advise motorists of an alternate route from Interstate 59 to Interstate 20.  From Interstate 59, motorists can take Exit 126 to Highway 18 in Pachuta to Highway 45 North and continue to Interstate 20.

Texas: Hardin County Under Mandatory Evacuation

Hardin County Judge Billy Caraway has issued a mandatory evacuation for all Hardin County residents beginning at 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 31. This order will remain in effect until it is deemed safe for citizens to return.

Residents should use Hwy. 96 North, Hwy. 69 North and FM 92 North. Emergency Management personnel from state and local governments have worked dilligently since Hurricane Rita to improve evacuation preparations, including fuel availability along the route.

Members of the Texas National Guard assisted more than 120 Hardin County residents today. They were evacuated by bus and ambulance. A number of those residents also brought their pets, who were also documented and evacuated with their owners.

Residents can still register with 2-1-1 for evacuation assistance, and those unable to evacuate on their own are encouraged to do so. The Silsbee Middle School evacuation hub re-opened today, Aug. 31, at 7:30 a.m. Residents should arrive early for registration, as the last bus will leave at 3:00 p.m.

Sandbags will be available to Hardin County residents at the following locations: Precinct 1, Farmer St. @ Old Hwy. 418 and Silsbee Fire Station; Precinct 2, Fire Station on FM 92N and Precinct barn off Hwy. 69 north of Kountze; Precinct 3, Sour Lake barn in Pinewood and Keith Road Fire Station in Saratoga; Precinct 4, Keith Road Fire Station. Bring your own shovel and bucket. For more information call Hardin County Emergency Management at 246-5119.

DISPELLING EVACUATION RUMORS

Emergency Management Officials are receiving a high volume of calls about the evacuation for Jefferson, Hardin and Orange Counties.  Apparently someone has spread a false rumor that the Southeast Texas Evacuation Order has been lifted.  That is not true.

The evacuation order remains in place.  Unless the media receives official notification from Southeast Texas Emergency Management, All previous information that has been released is still in effect.

Citizens are asked to visit www.setinfo.org for the latest information.

Texas: Orange County Issues Mandatory Evacuation

1. Due to HURRICANE GUSTAV, the County Judge/ Mayors, under Texas law, has issued the
following mandatory evacuation for those who live, work, or are visiting in Orange County
effective 6:00 AM, August 31, 2008.

2. Immediately 211 registries should embark to their destination locations of: Vidor Elementary
School, Hwy 90 and Lamar Student Center, Orange.

3. Orange County area’s should following the recommended evacuation routes:

  • STATE HWY 87 N.
  • FM 105 N. TO HWY 96
  • HWY 62 N. TO HWY 96
